Meet your guide at 10:30am at the San Domenico Basilica in Siena for the start of your walking tour. Let's start with a walk close to the magnificent Basilica of San Domenico to admire its Gothic architecture constructed entirely in brick. Explore Siena’s Old Town and listen as your guide points out its most important historical buildings, such as Rocca Salimbeni, currently housing the seat of the the most ancient bank in the world, the Monte dei Paschi. The palace was built in the XIV century, likely above pre-existing XII-XIII century structures belonging to the Salimbeni family. Walk with us to Palazzo Tolomei, which is said to be the oldest private palace in Siena and see the imposing stone tower of Palazzo Chigi Saracini, a palace erected in the mid-12th century by the powerful Marescotti family. Currently, this building is the seat of the prestigious Accademia Musicale, founded in 1923.
Continue to admire one of italy's most beautiful piazzas, built in the shape of a shell, the Piazza del Campo is the seat of one of the most famous medieval tournaments, the Palio horse race which is held twice a year by the city's Contrada neighbourhoods and is to this day, the heart and soul of this magnificent medieval city.
End your tour with a guided visit to one of the most spectacular cathedrals in Italy, the Siena Duomo (Siena Cathedral), named locally as Il Duomo. Your guide will escort you into this breathtaking cathedral to see impressive masterpieces by Donatello, Bernini and Michelangelo. Admire the exquisite Gothic architecture; walk through nave arcades with Renaissance busts of popes and emperors; and marvel at the unique black-and-white-striped bell tower.
